South Jakarta Operates Water Mist to Curb Air Pollution

The South Jakarta Administration has reactivated the water mist facility at the Mayor's Office to curb air pollution during the prolonged dry season, including pollution caused by volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau.

To help curb air pollution while also reducing heat

South Jakarta Mayor Syafrin Liputo said operating the water mist system at the Mayor's Office is expected to set an example and encourage similar efforts at government and private buildings.

"We encourage all building owners in South Jakarta with buildings of eight stories or more to operate their water mist systems. In addition to helping reduce pollution, these systems can also make outdoor areas more comfortable by helping lower temperatures," he said on Tuesday (9/8).

Syafrin explained that the South Jakarta Administration has scheduled three water mist operating periods each day to help reduce air pollution and heat, from 9 AM to 11 AM, 1 PM to 3 PM, and 5 PM to 7 PM.

"As for how long this will continue, we will keep monitoring information from the central government and the Jakarta Provincial Government, particularly regarding weather conditions and pollutants," he noted.

Syafrin added that mobile water mist spraying is also being carried out along several public roads, in addition to at high-rise buildings.

The South Jakarta Administration has deployed all operational vehicles equipped with water mist systems from three technical sub-agencies, namely the South Jakarta Environment Sub-agency, Fire and Rescue Sub-agency, and Parks and Urban Forest Sub-agency.

"Water mist spraying is focused on major roads with high traffic and mobility. The mobile water mist operation is expected to help curb air pollution while also reducing heat for residents carrying out activities outdoors," he said.
